Two Swiss pioneers present an electric truck with a unique performance battery: 900KWH

Our project is becoming a reality: a fully electric truck that ensures the internal transport of construction machinery between our branches.

It is the first of Designwerk’s “Engineered in Switzerland”.

This means that electromobility is reaching heavy and special transport and is setting a clear example in the transport sector on site.

An innovation for more sustainable construction sites

The Avesco Rent and Friderici Spécial project is based on the finding that around 50% of CO2 emissions on construction sites derive from transport.

Acting on the transport of machinery to reduce the carbon footprint of construction sites was an obvious choice for the directors of these two Vaud companies.

The electric truck presented today in Lucerne is the result of their joint commitment, in collaboration with Designwerk.

Challenges and intelligent responses

The Friderici Special electric truck has a range of 900 kilometres empty and 500 kilometres with a total weight of 40 tons. To achieve this performance, several challenges had to be overcome, starting with the weight of the towing vehicle, which is heavier than that of a vehicle with a combustion engine. A new architecture of the entire road train and a two-axle semi-trailer from the Italian manufacturer Bertoja, designed with high-performance steel and optimized thanks to the experience in this type of transport, made it possible to save enough weight to reach the goal of 21 tons of payload.

Another question that arises in any discussion about an electric vehicle is the duration of the batteries over time. Designwerk can guarantee a duration of 10 years, after which the batteries can be reused as a storage solution.

The operation of this electric truck has challenged some preconceived ideas of the transport sector. The trolley recharging time is estimated at 9 hours, which can only be recharged at a supercharger installed in the first loading point, i.e. at the customer’s premises. The truck parked directly on its route thus saves a few kilometres a day, which is essential for optimizing its operation to the maximum. Rarely in planning a route, the differences in height and the constraints to which the vehicle is subjected have been studied so much.

Note: In the first year of operation, the compensation for the production of the batteries was included in the calculation of the CO2 reduction. As a result, the CO2 / km reduction will show higher values from October 2022.

100% CO2 NEUTRAL TRANSPORT

The Friderici Special truck is perfectly suited for transporting rental cars between Avesco Rent branches. This internal transport will now be completely neutral from the point of view of CO2 emissions, consequently reducing the carbon footprint of construction sites. The new vehicle will do five weekly laps across Switzerland, before returning to Avesco Rent’s headquarters in Puidoux (VD) in the evening to be recharged with eco-friendly electricity. For Friderici Special Administrator Clément Friderici:“It is a big step to see this 40-ton electric truck join our fleet. This technological prowess opens up new development prospects towards more sustainable transport. We are happy to allow this idea to pass from the prototype stage to that of an industrial tool. We hope to inspire the logistics sector and demonstrate that sustainability, one of the main challenges of the coming years, is also possible in this field. We were surprised at how quickly these solutions arrived on the market. The electric truck will go into circulation on October 15, 2021.

Another question that arises in any discussion about an electric vehicle is the resistance of the batteries over time. Designwerk can guarantee 10 years of operation, after which the batteries will be reused as a storage solution.
